Early systems that utilized RS-232 interfaces, which ran along at 19.6Kbps, were compatible with the higher capacitance silicon TVS device technology. However, today's data transfer rates run into the gigabit range and capacitance plays a much larger role. Designers are faced with the challenge of finding protection solutions that are compatible with higher data rate applications such as Ethernet, USB and IEEE-1394. High data rate applications require low capacitance protection solutions; which can be achieved by inserting a high voltage rectifier chip in opposite polarity of a TVS diode array.
Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) devices provide protection at board level from the effects of Electrostatic Discharge (EFT) as defined by IEC 61000-4-2. In addition, TVS devices provide lightning and AC power fault protection meeting standard requirements such as IEC 61000-4-4, IEC 61000-4-5, Bellcore GR1089, ITU-T K20, K21 and YD/T993 (China).
